M2. Apply video effects, titles and graphics to the materials

In this slide show, it shows the edits such as colour editing, sound effects and, screen in screen.
I colour edited all the scenes in the story to give a more thriller ambiance and visual such as a more blue oriented colour for the audience. The colour blue works well with thrillers as it helps define the situation as cold and serious for the characters that are being shown on screen. Also having the scenes seem more visually cold is a convention in thrillers. Having bright colours would send a more upbeat and light-hearted message to the audience, which is the contrary of what I would want. |
For the sound effects, I added sound effects of ambience sound and suspense to better show the mood of the scene. For example at the beginning of the scenes where the protagonist finds the emails, the soundtrack in the background becomes more noticeable by the second, eventually, it gets overwhelming and stops as soon as the protagonist shuts the laptop. In post, I placed the song underneath the video so it started from the point he founded the emails, I then added a sound effect on the song to get louder by the second to increase the tension of the scene, then I edited the sound of the laptop shutting to be much louder then what it really is. This whole scene is meant to take place from the protagonist’s perspective of the situation.
The screen on screen edit was used to show what the character was seeing without facing the screen of the laptop. Doing so allowed the audience to see what the protagonist was seeing without having to set my camera o the actual screen of the laptop. I avoided the laptop as I doubted it would be fully visible for the audience to see on screen, displaying the video using screen on screen on the side of the display allowed the audience to have a large view of the visuals. Once the music became really loud, I switched the effect from screen on screen to normal so it displayed on the whole screen, this is because I expected the audience to be curious about what is being shown in the emails and having it full screen allows them to fully focus on what is being shown, the scene finished with the protagonist shutting the computer in full panic. |
D2. Demonstrate control of the audio tracks in the editing materials
Bellow is an example of all the sounds in the media product, for example sound effects, dialogue and ambience sound.
To the right, shows some screenshots of how I controlled the sound levels in the media product, firstly I could control the volume output of each recording so the output of the sound goes well with the other scenes. This also allows me to control any unwanted sound escaping such as me saying something in the background when adding music, I needed to also make sure the sound didn't rinse out the sound of the vocals or the other way around, this mistake would make it difficult for my audience to listen to the short film. Secondly, the background sounds to enhance dialogue and lastly the equaliser to control the sound. I used some effect on the background soundtrack which in the beginning scene made the track louder by the second which would create a sense of danger approaching for the audience.

To the left, shows how I controlled the positioning of each sound recording such as dialogues and sound effects into the timeline of my short film production. For example, it shows how I placed ambience sounds and sound effects together by keeping both in their proper time and ensuring they are both audible as they need to be. The ability to place sounds anywhere in the video allows me to create many effects of suspension, I did this by for example starting the thriller background soundtrack as soon as he opened the email, this creates the illusion that he stumbled in danger as soon as he opened the email. Doing something like this helps me to better indicate the dangers in the short film for the audience, this technique can also make the audience pay more attention as they innately know that danger will be coming towards the protagonist. Another example is the sudden scary alert sound effect that appeared when the audience saw the antagonist in the bush stalking the students in the school. The editing software allowed me to place the sound in that moment of the video which helped get the message across to the audience of how dangerous the antagonist really is.
