P1: Explain the different structure of identified audio-visual promos for different promos
M1. Analyse the different approaches used in the identified promos
Music video
This music video I have chosen is a performance-based music video as it contains the singer singing in a fictional location and not a live concert. The audience of this video is not very specific as it appeals and relates to most people as it talks about parents. People of many different ages and cultures would also find it appealing as the language used contains some slang such as "thang" and "fo show". After analysing the music video's lyrics, I noticed that they talk about parents relationships and why some parents choose to divorce. After I closer look at the music video, the artist's intention is to represent everyone who is listening to this song as the audience in this music video.
The setting of this music video performance takes place on a tv station or talk show. The colours are very vibrant, but it doesn't look too heavily edited, instead, it tries to resemble those old songs that would be played on a tv station for the public other than the artist playing himself as the guitarist drummer and so on. For the camera shots taken in this music video, it also resembles the camera shots that would be taken on old live tv cameras, this can be seen by the dimensions of the camera shot, the one displayed looks as though it is from the 80s. For the sound, there is a mixture of sounds in the music video such as the audience cheering and the singing of the song. The older music videos would have been taken this way, although the presence of the audience is used to help give meaning to the music video.
Finding meaning in this music video was difficult at first, but then I realised that many people had different meanings of the music video. By the look of the music video, the music video appears to be very joyful and happy, the colours are bright and vivid, everyone is cheering and it gives the feeling that this song celebrates the happiness and so on. Although another meaning would be looking into the lyrics of the song. After analysing the song's lyrics, I realised it talked about parents' love for each other ending and having to divorce one another. This can be found in the lyrics like "Are we still in denial when we know we're not happy here", "But separate's always better when there's feelings involved" and "Don't want to meet your daddy". Where the most meaning can be found is with the audience in the music video cheering him on as if though they aren't listening to what he is saying, instead just following the beat of the song like everyone does when listening to the song. The meaning behind this has been explained as the artist being very lonely when wanting to explain a serious issue such as parental divorce, although the serious nature of the song lyrics, everyone such as the audience and the public listening prefer to only listen to the beat of the song instead of the message the artist is trying to deliver. The artist is already aware that people prefer to listen to a song that will make them happy just by listening to the beat and chorus, so he combined a serious message with a light-hearted song which still shows to this day that many people don't pay attention to the message he was trying to deliver.
Advertisements
This advert shows a band that will be going around in tours to perform in concerts. The audience for this advert would be the fans of this band, the advert shows this by having close-ups of the singers of the band before their name appears on the screen, this should instantly get the fans attention as this technique is specifically for the fans that recognise their idols just by looking at them. The advert also says "the wait is over", meaning this is more of an announcement for the audience than an advert. this can also mean that the band previously told the public that they will perform on a certain date in the future, and now the time is close. The advert also places their most popular music at the end of the advertisement to draw in any fans of that specific song as many people prefer some popular songs from bands as they may not be fully fledged fan members.
As the advert also talks about waiting at the beginning, the use of black and white can symbolise the past, the golden writing in big on the screen becomes your make focus as its colours pop out more than the dull white and black. Next thing on the screen is a concert shown with many colours, which makes the audience feel as if they will be missing out on a great concert that will be happening in the future. The use of these vibrant colours also better display how the audience will be feeling at the concert.
At the end of the advertisement, the largest text other than the name of the group, says "ON SALE TOMORROW 9 AM" with a rectangle outlining it. That use of text focuses the eyes of the audience on a specific part of the screen. This is likely to be what the audience was waiting to see to purchase the tickets as soon as possible.
Social-Realism film trailer
This piece of media is a trailer from the movie Billy Elliot which is about a young boy defying the norm that entails boys aren’t meant for ballet. Within the story, the audience observes how a young boy can face adversity and yet come out on top.
The structure in the trailer was made in a very interesting way that is able to attract people's attention easily, it shows at the beginning what would be stereotyped as a manly sport and song back when this film was made (2000), it presents the character as comedic but out of touch with the sport. The character follows to show interest within the art of ballet as he further progresses in the film. To the audience's expectations, the boy's choice to follow his own path in contrary to what the citizens of County Durham are projecting upon their own children triggers a backlash against the boy in several forms such as rejection from his own family and friends.
In the trailer, the colours appearing on screen are very bland and almost grey, this helps to deliver the message that this film could be quite gritty and difficult for light-hearted audiences. What I found very interesting is how much blue the characters and the set are designed, after searching the meaning of blue (peace, tranquility, and trust), I found that it goes well with what Billy says during the movie of how he feels about dancing which he responds “I feel like I’m flying, I feel like I’m electricity”.
D1. Compare and contrast the messaging within these identified promos
(Outkast - Hey Ya) In this song, the meaning is shown through the lyrics instead of the sound of the music. It talks about parents' love for each other ending and having to divorce one another. This can be found in the lyrics like "Are we still in denial when we know we're not happy here", "But separate's always better when there's feelings involved" and "Don't want to meet your daddy".
From listening to these lyrics I understand that the singer is talking about parental separation and the lack of love that can be found between couples. People have theorised that this song best describes the emotions that the songwriter is feeling. Another impactful lyric from the song is "don't want him here they just wanna dance" which is shown by the upbeat mood even though the artist is singing a song full of sadness. |
In this advert used by West life, it gives the message that the band has been hidden away from their fans and now they are finally back, this is shown with the colours they used such as black and white which are used to connote something old or from the past. This is further shown by the text saying "the wait is over". While this is a short advert designed to be played on youtube and social media, it can be very impactful for the fans when showing the bands faces and dates for tickets.

Billy Elliot is a film about a working-class boy, who wants to be a ballet dancer, growing up during a historical event—the miners’ strike, which was widely spoken as “the most bitter industrial dispute in British history). By what we have been shown in the trailer, this is a story narrative that could both inspire the audience and make them feel uncomfortable by the characters approach to understanding and facing who he is. The family shown within the trailer are shown to be the usual English working-class family. In this movie, gender divisions are shown in the gym where boys box and girls attend ballet lessons. As Billy’s father simply puts it ‘lads do football, boxing, or wrestling — not fricking’ ballet!’ Despite how his father feels, billy still wants to dance. Through a tracking shot of the dancer’s feet, the different genders are clearly presented with Billy’s large feet and the girl’s small feet. As Billy Elliot is set in the 1980s, homosexuality was still a fragile topic to discuss compared with today. Homosexuality is explored through homophobic comments by family members and Billy’s friend Michael, he is not a ballet dancer himself yet confidently cross-dresses and helps Billy with his dance routine.
