P2 Describe a chosen comic book or graphic novel
SPIDER-MAN 2016
As I am more familiar with the Marvel comic books, I decided to go with the new modern Spiderman 2016
with the recently introduced character Miles Morales who is a very unconventional character because of
his ethnicity.
Target Audience
The target audience for this comic book would be from kids of the age of 13 to adults of the age of 18 because
the comic book presents characters who do not curse in the comic, also the environment of the comic which
takes place in high school for the character Miles Morales. This comic can also be read by people of the age 18
and older as this is a Spiderman spin-off comic which uses characters from the marvel universe which the
fans are very aware of.
Genre
The genre of this comic is super hero, action and drama. The action in this comic is the large amounts of
fighting and combat in the pages, superhero genre is Spiderman being the superhero figure in the comic
and the drama is the events Miles Morales (main character) go through in the comic just like every other
teenager in their life like romance, revenge, betrayal and personal development.

Tittle
The picture showing on the left side is the comic book cover of the new spiderman. As you can see the title of spiderman is written in the old fashioned way which makes you recall the classic Spiderman in the 1990s. The colours of the text also seem to be written in red and black which is unique because it resembles the colours of the suit that are being worn by the new Spiderman which is red and black.
Art
The art in the cover firstly shows the main character Spiderman in the cover of the comic book. In the background, the writers planned to leave clues and hints to what time this Spiderman takes place in. For example the name Parker Industries come in to the story later on and the character captain America, leader of the avengers also appears in the comic. The artist portrayed superheroes in this comic as almost they were celebrities because of the poster that can be seen in the background.
Audience
In this comic, the more appropriate audience would be people from the age of 13+ because of the comics light hearted action and drama. Although that this character in the comic show that Marvel wanted a larger audience to read this comic book because of the unconventional ethnicity within the character. Miles Morales is half African- American and half Latin American, this result in the character having a much more mixed background unlike the other characters in marvel. This may show that marvel is trying to reach larger and more vast audience with this comic book.
Meaning
To me the cover's meaning is that the superhero on the cover is an underdog because of the posters being shown like Parker industries, which is Peter Parker's scientific company which is shown to be a success and the avengers are seen as gods among humans on earth because of the low angle camera shot of Captain America.
The main character swinging by the buildings show that he is on his way somewhere which can also represent how he strives to become a superhero just like the ones on the poster by doing the hard job that is required by him to do.

Back Story
The back story is Miles Morales gains the powers of spiderman after he is bitten by a radioactive spider, this affects his life as he feels a sense of responsibility to use his super powers for good and follow the footsteps of the previous Spiderman. During his progress to become the superhero he wants to become, he realises how much of a toll a takes in your life.
Panel
In this image, there is no panel shown as this is the first appearance of the character Spiderman and Blackheart. By using a big panel, it gives the artist a chance to draw out the current state of the environment around them which tells the reader how powerful or dangerous the hero or villain is.
Meaning
The meaning behind this page is to show how powerful one of the characters is on the page, the use of images help give a clear picture to the audience that the character is powerful, also spiderman is shown to be hurt as he's holding his right shoulder, this gives the meaning that our main character is not strong enough to deal with this villain leaving you wondering what will happen next because this is the first page of the book you see.

Boxes
At the start of a scene, in the first panel you would see a box that will indicate the start of the scene and it will give you information on what is it that you are looking a, what time or the location of the scene. Personality This shows the personality of spiderman to the audience, the audience's impression would be that he is young and inexperienced, therefore he is almost in shock when looking at all these superheroes on the ground passed out. Spiderman says "I don't understand" which shows the character to have thought that these superheroes were strong or almost invisible and that whoever defeated them would beat him easily, therefore he is scared. Development As in character development, Spiderman is yet in a young stage in his career. This will affect him in the future and will make him feel he needs to be stronger to protect people alongside the heroes, and that sometimes the fate of justice can lie in his hands. To most if the readers, some of the things that the character will have to overcome are problems that people who relate to characters have as well. This would also help the readers know how to develop with their problems. Appeal to Audience This would appeal to the audience as they will see spiderman feel inexperienced and eventually evolve to an experienced hero who can handle himself. Also seeing the young hero scared reminds you he has the same feelings as you, which is relatable in some ways. It also appeals to the audience in a way the character has been created, the character is from the US, yet unlike other superheroes he has a mix of African American and Mexican. Therefore for the audience could also relate with the culture of the character. |
